Go Get Yourz

When I say go get yourz, it’s meant to illustrate the true power all people have inside of them. If Helen Keller can operate under her conditions and make a huge impact on the world, then you can too.

I’ve done internet radio. People have featured me on their blogs and vlogs before. I’ve also had the opportunity to speak on different podcast platforms. Yet, this past weekend was a little bit different. I managed to score a seat on a local, live, radio show. Itz Yourz Live 97.5 is one of the hottest platforms in the state of Maryland. Sure, you may think I’m exaggerating. That’s not even a quarter of the point here. To be able to get this far has been a total honor and a blessing to add to my testimony.

Where I Come From

The Eastern Shore is known to most Marylanders as the place where Ocean City is the best thing going.  Most people in cities like Baltimore or the Washington DC area are often quick to talk about how much this area is lacking. We are often labeled as soft. Others might even say we’re slow. Regardless of what anyone says, the Eastern Shore of Maryland is beginning to blossom like a spring time vine.

Most young black men who grow up on the Eastern Shore get caught up. It’s easy to see the lives of your favorite drug dealer and want what they have. Although there are people who do make a great living going different routes, it just doesn’t seem as appealing as the fast life. So many guys around here go to prison based off of a false sense of reality. The false sense is thinking one is limited in this day and age to only becoming a king pin, rapper, or a sports superstar. The reality is that there is a lot more opportunity around here than most would admit.

What Opportunities?

No matter how hardcore most people think they are in this area, we are nothing compared to major urban areas. Take a look at Baltimore for example. To live in the hood in Baltimore, you’re more likely to be born into gang violence and drug wars. From what I’ve noticed here on the Shore, there are some murders. There are some gangs. Poverty still exists. There’s still a system in place designed for a lot of young men to fail. Yes I get that part. I still think a lot of people fail to understand the control aspect that authorities have on this area compared to major cities.

It’s a lot easier to get caught up for crimes here. Take a look at the numbers. Understand, this area is spread out in small sections. I often see people get out of prison just to fall right back into the same cycle that got them thrown into prison in the first place. Maybe if this was the 80s or the 90s, there would be a way to get away with more crime. When I think about the growth of technology, I can see those old school crimes are going to soon be obsolete.

Today, I feel there is opportunity around here because so many people are waking up and creating lanes for others to invest in themselves beyond the old ways of thinking. As you know, most people stop themselves. You could chalk that up to the old slave mentality. After all, Maryland did play a major role in slavery and the civil war. Regardless, you have to look at the bigger picture. What we complain about is far less worse than people who have to deal with life threatening situations on an hourly basis. Most are so caught up in the bad things in life they forget that there is good.

Quit Lying To Yourself

The sad thing is, most people would rather believe they are worthless than to believe they have something to offer. I fell into this trap mostly because of the people I surrounded myself with. They often made me feel like I was stuck in a rut when in reality I had all the opportunity in the world. I just chose to go left when I had every chance to go right. Sometimes I think it was out of fear. I didn’t believe I had what it took to be successful in this world without doing crime.

I often hear people come up with excuses as to why they can’t do what they want to do in their lives on the Eastern Shore. People complain about needing a license but wont invest in the courses it takes to get their license. I see others complain about not having a car, yet they always manage to buy the latest designer clothes. People also want to express how tough they are but never want to fight the real battles that hinder them from getting out of a poor situation. The real fears aren’t the people who are trying to hold you back. The real fears are the obstacles you place in you and your family’s minds.

Invest In Yourself

Many people have the mentality that no one is going to give you anything in this world. I think this is both true and untrue at the same time.

It is untrue because I believe that life gives us opportunities all the time. In my experience, I have always had the choice to go one way or the other. Even so called “miracles” were placed right in front of my face and I still couldn’t see them.

I think the mentality is true because you’re the one who has to put in the effort to make things happen. Someone could give you a million dollars today and you can still go broke if you don’t learn what it means to invest and make the necessary sacrifices to increase your riches.

Conclusion

Before I went to speak live on air, I felt about 10% nervous. The thing is I felt 90% honored and humbled. I have been putting in so much work over the last few years that I felt comfortable in that atmosphere. Knowing that I had went from a destructive type of lifestyle to investing in my future brought a great sense of confidence to myself. I made the decision to go out there and face all of my fears regardless of what people think about me.

Failing, criticism, and being different use to be the things that held me back from the things that I really wanted in life. I remember I use to be so prideful thinking that I was wrong to ask for help. Now I know that nobody wins without asking for help. I now know that it’s more important to speak my truth than to protect a false image to make myself look tough. The real tough ones are the ones who can face their fears and move forward regardless.

I  know how tough it is to be vulnerable in a world that constantly tells you being vulnerable is the sin of all sins. After traveling the US and meeting people from all over the world, I see that life is so much bigger than my excuses. Don’t let your excuses be bigger than your spirit.

You know the things you’re good at. Express that. You just never know where things could lead you if you just apply yourself. Peace!
